A report on CBNC on June 6, 2019 has revealed the team leaders of Facebook's rumored crypto project and that there are currently over 100 staff working on the project.
According to the report, there are now more than 100 people working on the project, according to information on LinkedIn, and Facebook is still expanding the team. The company has more than 40 openings for the business unit, according to the Facebook careers website.
The aim of Facebook’s new crypto project, according to advertising on its career descriptions, is to provide a public service centered on accessibility:
“Our ultimate goal is to help billions of people with access to things they don’t have now — that could be things like healthcare, equitable financial services, or new ways to save or share information.”
Also according to a report by The Information on June 5, 2019 says Facebook may likely launch the project this month and the currency may be tied to the U.S Dollar which will function as border-less currency with no transaction fee and will be aggressively marketed in developing nations where government-backed currencies are more volatile.
In the Facebook's career openings shows that some of the projects are based on the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, Califonia, while others at Tel Aviv, Israel, the base of Tomer Barel, which is reported to be one of the vice presidents of the project.
Also pointing at the Facebook opening says “The Tel-Aviv engineering team will participate in shaping and pushing forward this vision, while focusing on the development of a state-of-the-art near real-time AI platform, to serve the blockchain project,”
The head of Facebook’s blockchain-based project is reported to be David Marcus. Marcus served on the board of cryptocurrency exchange and wallet service Coinbase until recently, and previously worked as the president of PayPal.
Tomer Barel, VP of risk and operations is said to have previously worked about nine years with PayPal and joined the Facebook project in May 2018.
Also, Facebook developer Eric Nakagawa will reportedly take the title, “head of open source.” Nakagawa has reportedly championed open source projects in the past at PyTorch artificial intelligence (AI) software. Nakagawa also previously acted as founder and CEO of popular 2000s humor website, “I Can Has Cheezburger?”
Others includes Kevin Weil, VP of product, who is reported to have been Instagram's Vice President of product for about two years, James Everingham, head of engineering has been head of engineering of Instagram for three years, Former Facebook's head of News Feed product design, Geoff Teehan is head of product design of the project.
